Metal Fabrication Department

Historical background

Metal fabrication being one of the departments in National Instructors College Abilonino conducts training in Diploma Instructor and Technical Teacher Education (DITTE) which is assessed and awarded by Kyambogo University. This. programme replaced the former Diploma Technical Teacher Education (DTTE). At first the current (DITTE) programme was conducted for two years and the targeted students were National Certificate graduates with at least two years working experience. Currently, DITTE is conducted for one year and the targeted students are National Diploma graduates with at least two years working experience in their various displines. The admission is done after subjecting the applicants to practical competence tests.

Achievements

  • CPD Training was conducted to staff on TIG welding.
  • The department acquired a MIG welding machine for training students on advanced welding practices.
  • Four metallic windows were fabricated for posho mill machine house.
  • Three metallic doors and six windows were fabricated for the security house.
  • General repair of beds in the doctor Janes hostel for girls was done.
  • Maintenance of two metallic water tank stands for the boys’ hostel was done.
  • A maize sheller machine was fabricated by students as a project and is driven by auto engine.

Services offered

  • Training of instructors to meet the labour market demand for Technical Institutions and the industries across the whole country.
  • Maintenance and repair of all the college facilities which involve metal works e.g. trailer for the college tractor, hostel beds, water tanks and automobile parts such as silencer, leaf spring etc.
  • Provision of continuous professional development to staff in identified areas.

Future plans

  • Promotion of research and innovation.
  • Acquisition of machine tools e.g. lathe, shaper, miller, and cylindrical grinding machines to ease training in the course unit of basic machine practice.
  • Produce instructors who are capable of serving both industries and Technical Training Institutions.
  • Fabrication of fifteen pairs of metallic dustbins and sixty sign posts to create talking compounds which will enable greening of NICA.
